EDISON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - State police said two people were killed when at least six vehicles collided on a major highway in New Jersey during the morning rush, creating fires and snarling traffic for several hours.

The crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. Friday in the southbound lanes of Route 440 near Interstate 287 in Edison Township.

Authorities said six people were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Police said others with more serious injuries were still being evaluated.

A stretch of the road was closed while the crash was investigated, causing major travel delays in the area that were expected to continue into the afternoon.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
