ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - A Mass was held at St. Frances Cabrini Church to recognize the 12th, and final, day of Christmas. The ceremony is called Epiphany.
The Christmas story was told with a focus on the three wise men. Father Chad Partain said the Magi are the reason king cakes are a Mardi Gras tradition.
Everyone present was served both king cake and Queen's Soup after watching the burning of the greens.
"Which symbolizes the light of Christ, coming into the world," said Father Partain. "It's also a marking that the Christmas season has come to a close. Nothing says Christmas is over like a hundred burning Christmas trees."
Mardi Gras royalty from multiple Alexandria krewes were also recognized while everyone sipped on their Queen's Soup.
