NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A judge in New Orleans says a 28-year-old woman was legally insane when she killed her young children five years ago.
The decision by Criminal District Judge Robin Pittman ended a five-day trial for Chelsea Thornton.
The woman was charged with murder in the gunshot killing of her 3-year-old son and the drowning of her 4-year-old daughter. Evidence showed she killed them in their apartment on Oct. 17, 2012.
The Times-Picayune reports Thornton faced life imprisonment without the possibility of parole had she been convicted of first-degree murder. The judge's decision means the woman will continue receiving mental health treatment.
The judge weighed the differing opinions of five court-appointed mental health professionals who disagreed over Thornton's sanity at the time of the slayings.
