Jury finds former Evergreen police chief guilty of murder

MARKSVILLE, La. (KALB) - It took a Marskville jury just under 90 minutes to find the former chief of police in Evergreen guilty of the death of his wife in 2015.

Charles Mayeux had been charged with second degree murder in the death of Shelley Mayeux in March 2015. Mayeux's house had caught fire, and Shelly's remains were found inside. Charles was later charged with second degree murder and aggravated arson.

It took the jury just under 90 minutes to find him guilty of second degree murder according to Mayeux's attorney, Chad Guillot.

Mayeux will be sentenced on Sept. 12 before 12th Judicial District Judge William Bennett. Conviction of second degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without parole.
