ALEXANDRIA, La (KALB) - Candidates for a vacant position on the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal spoke to members of the Alexandria Exchange Club Thursday afternoon. LaSalle Parish District Court Judge Chris Peters and Natchitoches Parish District Attorney Van Kyzar will face off on the ballot on November 8.
Judge Peters has served the citizens of LaSalle Parish as judge for eight years. Prior to that, he also practiced law in both LaSalle and Rapides Parishes. He is a graduate of the LSU School of Law. Peters is also very active in his community. He is married to Jennifer Peters and together they have two children. Peters said his experience on the bench qualifies him for a seat on the Court of Appeal.
"In essence the Court of Appeal grades the papers of the lower courts and I think it's really important that we have somebody that's on the Court of Appeal that has gone through the trenches as they may say and have made decisions on the district level," Peters said.
Kyzar has been District Attorney in Natchitoches Parish for 19 years. Prior to that he served as and Assistant District Attorney from 1985 until 1996. He is a graduate of Northwestern State University and the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. He also has 20 years of experience as a senior partner in a private law firm. He and his wife Theresa have five sons. Kyzar said his experience as a prosecutor is what makes him the right candidate for the court.
"I've been an active courtroom DA not just a supervising DA and I believe I know the issues and will be able to bring that knowledge to the Court of Appeals and best serve the people," Kyzar said.
Peters father Judge Jimmie Peters created the vacancy on the court when he chose not to seek re-election.
