Alexandria, LA. (KALB) An estimated 40,000 women in the United States die of breast cancer every year. But Genius 3D Mammography is on the front lines in the fight against the disease. These life-saving exams are now available exclusively at the Women's Life Center at Christus Saint Frances Cabrini Hospital.

"This is something we've been dreaming about for years now so it's actually like a dream come true," said Diane Kitts, Supervisor of Mammography at the Women's Life Center.

The technology combines 2D and 3D imaging that examines breast tissue, no matter how dense, one layer at a time in fine detail. Clinical studies show it increases the detection of invasive breast cancer by 41%. "We look for things as tiny as grains of salt or sand," said Kitts.

She adds that every patient is special and the goal is to catch breast cancer as early as possible. "It's great to be able to see someone with an early diagnosis, not that we want anybody to have it but an early diagnosis and then watch them go through the process and see them 5-10 years later and they're cured and they're doing well and they're advocating for other patients."

Stuart Spurlin, Director of Radiology stresses the importance of early detection. At age 40 women should begin annual screening, and earlier for those with a history of breast cancer in their family.

"One extra effort may save you from a lifetime of regret. We spend a lot of time and effort to fight this disease and to stand by the women who have to go through this on a daily basis.

And for Spurlin, who lost a close friend to breast cancer, that fight is personal. "She was 40 years old. She was very close to me, she was like my sister so that's kind of a personal vendetta that I have against breast cancer now. I fight for Trish."
