LEESVILLE, La. (KALB) - If you were in Leesville on Sunday, you may have noticed the front lawn of the Courthouse looked more like a dog park. It’s because the ladies of Girl Scout Troop 143 held a fundraiser as part of their service project "Take Action for Animals".
The Troop has teamed up with all the local animal shelters and humane societies in Leesville, Rosepine and Deridder. The project includes volunteering at the shelters and humane societies, and hosting a few fundraisers.
On Sunday they hosted a community event where people could come and donate items or money. There was also a local veterinarian and representatives from the different organizations there to educate the attendees on animals. There were even a few animals there for adoption and fostering.
The organizations included West Louisiana Humane Society, Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office, Vernon and Beauregard Animal Shelters, Heart for Paws, Louisiana Lifeline for K9's, Foster Mama Kittys, Best Friends for Heroes, and Brothers and Sisters in Arms.
Troop Leader Gwen Haliburton said she was humbled by the amount of people who came to show their support.
"We've actually had a really good turnout,” said Haliburton. “We have quite a bit of items. We've also put different boxes at different veterinarians. So we've been receiving donations coming in. It's amazing how the community is coming together for it."
If you missed Sunday’s event the Troop said they will have boxes for donations at every veterinarian’s office in Leesville, Rosepine, and Deridder until the end of May.
