ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - Near the end of the 2017-18 school year Director of Transportation Velt "Buddy" Edwards retired after 16 years with the Rapides Parish School District.
Administration began looking for a new transportation director and had a hopeful candidate from Colorado in May, but that didn't pan out.
With fall quickly approaching, as well as the beginning of new community school zones, the district was looking to fill the position.
We spoke with superintendent Nason Authement at the June committee meeting Tuesday who said the responsibility has been placed in the hands of the Supervisor of Physical Plant Roy Rachal, for now.
As Supervisor of Physical Plant Rachal oversees facility maintenance, risk management, construction and logistics in schools.
Authement said they are working out the details for the fall.
Other items on June committee meeting agenda:
Grant Writer Kerri Nichols discussed the $918,918 federal Redesign Grant awarded to the district. The funds will be spent on curriculum and professional development in the district's low performing schools.
Director of Elementary Education Shannon Alford gave an update on community school zones. She said that by July 16 the moving process to new schools should be completed.
Executive Assistant Superintendent Kim Bennett gave an update of all programs and initiatives in Rapides Parish Schools for the 2018-19 school year. This includes things like SCALE Up (initiative to make classrooms more student centered), Fast ForWord (works with students extremely behind in reading), Affirm Eureka (A system with a bank of assessment questions for teachers. Some are identical to LEAP 2025), etc. The board will vote to renew a few program contracts at the July School Board Meeting.
