PINEVILLE, La. -- For the 24th consecutive year, local high school runners competed in a cross country meet dedicated to the name of a man who has left an indelible mark on the legacy of cross country and track and field on Rapides Parish.
John Miller, Sr., 85, helps to put on the John Miller Sr. Cross Country Meet every year at Buhlow Lake recreation area. A Lecompte native, Miller ran distance races for the high school track team. He then attended Louisiana College, and graduated in 1952 to become a teacher and coach at Oak Hill for 40 years.
Miller led his track and field team to 31 district championships and 24 regional titles while also beginning the first cross country team in Rapides Parish.Oak Hill's program won a district title 21 times.
And after retiring, the same school Miller had given so much of himself to began giving some back by sponsoring the cross country meet in his name.
Miller has been inducted into the Oak Hill Coaches' Hall of Fame, Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame and Louisiana High School Athletics Association Hall of Fame. In 2016, Miller received a track and field lifetime achievement award from the Louisiana Track and Field Coaches Association.
Wednesday's cross country meet featured 31 total local-area cross country teams, and awarded individual medals for best times along the 3-mile course. Below are the results.
