ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - You've had a good game when you post 16 points and 8 rebounds, but when you average that over a week - through four games - that's something special. Menard senior Jarrod Vercher did just that for the Eagles basketball team contributing two double double efforts to earn our Athlete of the Week.
"It's a big accomplishment," said Vercher. "I really didn't even know about it, but I'm glad to get it."
Following a 66-55 loss last week Monday at Avoyelles High School in which Vercher had 14 points and 5 rebounds, the senior shooting guard led the Eagles to three straight victories in the Menard Winter Classic over Oak Hill, University Academy and Glenmora.
"Glenmora was our biggest win this week. Jarrod didn't back down," explained Menard head coach Brian Terwilliger. "I think he had about 20 (points) in that game. Again, just doing it all. Getting on the boards, shooting threes, and just our glue guy really."
Vercher finished with an 18 point, 10 rebound double double against Glenmora, he had a 20 point, 10 rebound double double facing University Academy and chipped in 12 points and 6 boards in Menard's win over Oak Hill. He's making the most of his senior season and leaving it all on the court for the Eagles.
"He doesn't give up on a play. He'll chase a ball down and give us another chance to score the basketball and it gives us three more points or two more points on the board," added Terwilliger.
"It's my last season, so that's a big motivation for me this year," said Vercher.
With another win Wednesday night, Jarrod Vercher and the Menard Eagles improved to 12-5 on the season. You'll want to keep your eye out for the double double machine as he goes up against former Athlete of the Week Alex Hockersmith and the Panthers Friday night at Buckeye.
