BELTON, TX -- After suffering a heartbreaking loss in the first game of the Cru Holiday Classic, the Louisiana College men’s basketball team responded with a convincing 82-47 win over Millsaps College. Every player for the Wildcats scored in the game and the Wildcats’ tight defense forced 28 turnovers along the way. The Wildcats return to American Southwest Conference play in their next outing next Thursday against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Millsaps scored the first four points of the game on a layup and a pair of free throws, but the Wildcats answered back quickly with a three-ball from freshman Rex Hollis and a jumper by Travis Schultz on their first two attempts of the game. That would be the final lead change of the day as the Wildcats took over at the 18:21 mark of the first half. When it looked like the Majors would make their way back to challenge the LC lead, getting within four a few minutes later, the Wildcats took firm control of the game with a long point run.
The Wildcats finished the half outscoring Millsaps 31-10 to take the comfortable 46-21 lead into the break. The impressive stretch also included a 15-0 run over a seven-minute stretch of the half. Seven different players had at least one field goal in the first half as LC shot over 50% in the first half for the second game in a row.
The Wildcats would help put the game away early in the second half with a 9-4 run to start the final 20 minutes that included back-to-back long balls from freshmen Rex Hollis and Lashard Powell that put LC ahead by 30 at 55-25. An 80% performance from the free throw line in the second half also prevented the Majors from cutting into the large LC lead in the half.
Every player that entered the game for LC had at least two points in the game led by freshman guard Lashard Powell. He led all scorers with 20 points on the afternoon, Timothy Stokes was the only other player in double figures with 10 points, adding six assists, as the Wildcats spread the offense around the floor.
LC returns to play next week as they make a return trip to Belton, Texas to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor in their resumption of conference play. The game scheduled for Thursday evening will be the first of four straight road contests to start the 2018 schedule for the Wildcats.
