LECOMPTE, La. (KALB) - Rapides may be the Mustangs, but senior Desmond Green is the rain maker. The 5'5" guard hit eight 3-pointers in back-to-back district games last week while averaging 35 points per contest to earn our Athlete of the Week.
"It feels amazing because you're not going to hear Rapides often, but sometimes you've got to put on for your school," said Green. "Do what you've got to do to win games."
Desmond Green was a combined 16 for 30 shooting from downtown. His scorching hot stroke from deep helped him put up 28 points in a 107-61 victory at Rosepine last week Tuesday and drop 42 points on Pickering in Rapides' home win last Friday.
"I've been here 12 years," explained Rapides head coach Travis Broussard. "He's one of the top one or two shooters that I've had since we've been here. For being as little as he is, it's pretty impressive to see what he does on the basketball court."
On the season, Green is shooting about 35% from long range. In district play however, he's hitting at roughly a 40% clip. He's playing so well, he was chosen as one of 30 high school senior basketball players to participate in the LHSCA All-Star Game in March. Part of his ability to score so well is the way defenders play him based on his size.
"If they come too close I'm pretty sure I'm quick enough to drive around them and go to the goal, but if they don't get too close and they give me the opportunity to shoot then I'm going to shoot it," added Green.
Desmond Green takes what the defense gives him and he doesn't plan on letting up. On Tuesday, he poured in 43 points in a win over Oakdale.
