The Louisiana College softball team finished their three game American Southwest Conference series with the University of Texas at Dallas on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader split with the Comets. The Wildcats left the tying run on base in a 3-1 loss in game one, but came from behind with three runs in the sixth to take the 4-2 win in game two. LC will continue play in the ASC this weekend as they take on LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.
UTD struck first once again with an early inning run using the speed of leadoff batter Melissa Livermore to steal second and score on a single through the right side. After a scoreless second, the Wildcats answered with a quick 2-out rally after the first two batter of the inning went down looking at strike three. Sami Walters ripped a double down the right field line then came around to score on another double, this one from Mattie Stine, to tie the game at one each.
The Comets answered with a 2-out rally of their own in the bottom of the inning with three straight singles to score what would eventually be the game's winning run. Down 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, the Wildcats would have two prime chances to tie the game in both the sixth and seventh innings, but each time could not come up with the key hit needed.
In the sixth, back-to-back singles from Kaitlyn Moore and Taylor Hammock put the tying run on base with just 1-out in the inning. A line drive, double play back to the pitcher ended the threat and the inning with one swing of the bat. In the seventh, LC had speed in Briley Johnston and Sami Walters on second and third, this time with 2-out, but were left there as a ground ball to third ended the game.
Sami Walters was the only Wildcat with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mattie Stine had an RBI double in the game and Kaitlyn Moore, Taylor Hammock, Briley Johnston, and Shelby Bergeron each had hits as well. Lucy Lewis suffered the loss going 3.1 innings giving up three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits with two striekouts.
As they had done in the first two games of the series, UTD got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Two infield singles and two steals put runners at second and third for the Comets, followed by a walk that loaded the bases. A looping single to right center scored the run from third but that was all as LC starter Savannah Settle got the next two batters on a strikeout and foul out to get out of the jam.
The Wildcats came right back in the next half inning after a leadoff double by Mattie Stine. Pinch-runner Alyssa Ross moved to third on a ground out then came in to score on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Taylor Hammock to tie the score at one. The Comets regained the lead on a solo homerun in the bottom of third and the score remained 2-1 in UTD's favor until the top of the sixth inning.
Back-to-back singles to start the inning put the go ahead run on base for the Wildcats and a fly ball to center moved them both into scoring position. Stine put the ball in play to short allowing the run from third to score easily on the throw to first for the out tying the game. A walk put runners at the corners with 2-out and the Wildcats would finally get the key hit they needed against the Comets. Taylor Hammock scorched a ball down the left field plating Haliee Wilkins from third and sliding in under the tag at home was Haley Vezinat, scoring from first base.
Relief pitcher Lucy Lewis got the important shut down inning in the bottom half of the sixth to prevent the Comets from having any thoughts of making a come back. Although UTD got the tying run on base in the bottom of the second after a base hit and an error, Lewis got the final two batter to line out to second and ground out to first to complete the Wildcat win.
Lucy Lewis (2-2) threw the final 4.0 shutout, innings of the game allowing just two hits with two strikeouts, picking up her second win of the season. Samantha Cetta was 3-for-4 in the game and Mattie Stine was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Taylor Hammock went 1-for-2 driving in three of the Wildcats' four runs of the game.
The Wildcats travel to Longview, Texas for another three game ASC series, this time against LeTourneau University. The series is scheduled for a 6pm first pitch on Friday and a noon start for Saturday's doubleheader.
