The funeral will be held at 1 p-m at Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral in Alexandria, with burial to follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Gravel was an early civil rights activist who attracted national attention when he led the state’s delegation at the Democratic National Convention in 1948 instead of joining the Southern Dixiecrat walkout.

The skilled civil and criminal attorney successfully defended the late Congressman Otto Passman of Monroe in a 1979 bribery and conspiracy trial.

He also was on the defense team both in Edwards’ first trial, an acquittal on charges of illegally brokering hospital permits, and in the federal racketeering case which sent Edwards to prison two decades later for corruption in the granting of gaming licenses.
