Company officials say Springhill’s
Georgia-Pacific’s plywood plant and sawmill will be indefinitely
idled, leaving 400 employees with no immediate hope of
re-employment.
More than 200 of those workers attended an afternoon meeting
during which the announcement was made.
Georgia-Pacific shut down the facility and laid off the workers
in late January, citing a downturn in the housing and commercial
construction markets.
Company officials had pledged to revisit the work stoppage this
month.
Still, Georgia-Pacific is not terming the shutdown as a
permanent closure, as was the case in October with the plant in
Logansport. About 280 workers were left unemployed when that
decision was made. Much of the equipment has been removed from the
site.
In Springhill, company officials say a small crew will be
retained to maintain the machinery in case it’s put back on line.
Last year, Georgia-Pacific paid International Paper Company 237
million dollars for the Springhill plant and four other wood
products mills in Texas, Arkansas and Alabama.
