Police Chief Mike Knaps told the Baker City
Council that the police department has received a $24,000 gift to
buy two police dogs.
Knaps said the donor is a local resident who wishes to remain
anonymous.
Half of the money would enable the department replace Rocky, the
bomb-sniffing dog struck and killed on a road near Wakefield.
Knaps said the remaining $12,000 would go toward buying a
multipurpose narcotics dog, replacing an injured narcotics-sniffing
dog.
Because each of the dogs would cost $12,500, Knaps says the
remaining $1,000 will be paid by the city.
The dog would become part of the city’s police force by July
1st.
