The Rapides Parish School District’s Assistant Superintendent, Lyle Hutchinson, says the district is doing all it can to protect its administration, faculty members, and most importantly- its students.  Hutchinson says every school within the parish has at least one metal detector that’s used as needed to check for any forbidden items brought by students.  He says the devices have proven to be very effective.

Assistant Prinicipal, Duke Allgood, of the L.E.A.D. Center, an alternative school which stands for “learn effective attitudes and discipline”, says although there’s a very in depth daily process to check and search each student- it’s a system set in place by district leaders that’s well worth the effort.

Funding for the detector devices were provided with grant money received in conjunction with the sheriff’s department and the “Safe and Drug” program.  Hutchinson says the idea is to keep everyone safe by any means possible.
