Wondering how to actually get that stimulus check the President keeps talking about? IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman says it’s easy. “All you need to do to get a stimulus payment is file your tax return.” You also need to make at least $3000. “There’s a group of people who make $3000 through Social Security, through Veteran’s Benefits who normally wouldn’t file a tax return and this year they have to file a tax return in order to receive a stimulus payment, said Shulman. If you belong to that lower-income group, watch your mail, the IRS just sent out twenty-million packets that include instructions, and the simple 1040A form you’ll need. IRS centers and some community groups and churches will help you fill out the form for free. And if you still have questions? Shulman said the best place to get information in the IRS website: www.irs.gov On the website you’ll find a calculator to help determine if you qualify for the stimulus package and how much you’ll get. The stimulus payment won’t affect your tax refund or offset any money you owe the government. Shulman said, “If they’re due a refund, they should ask for a refund. If they owe the IRS money, they should pay.” And pay on time, or you’ll delay the arrival of your stimulus check, which could come as early next month. “In early may, stimulus payments will begin going out. The fastest way to receive a stimulus payment is to choose direct deposit when you file your tax return for your refund,” Shulman said. Direct deposit, or check in the mail, the IRS says it’s sending out more than 130 million stimulus payments this year.
