21 year old Baron Scooter Collins, a convicted drug dealer, was resisting arrest back in January. Police Officer Scott Nugent tasered him. Collins died shortly after. The next day, when word got around, the fatal incident became a controversy in Winnfield- hundreds of blacks marching dowtown.
Police say they’re not sure how Collins died. They say Collins ate the PCPs he had on him, but they’re also not sure how many times Scott Nugent shocked the young man.
Eyewitnesses told News Channel 5 it was multiple times, while Collins was handcuffed.
The city council voted to suspend Scott Nugent with pay-- by the way, he’s son to the former Chief of Police.
So Scott Nugent has been receiving pay checks all this time, but he’s not working.
Under the officer’s bill of rights, an investigation into misconduct must be completed within 60 days of the complaint being filed.
Winnfield PD says those 60 days are almost up.
For the past 3 months and 2 weeks, everyone-- Collin’s family, Nugent, the community-- they’re all waiting on the Cornoner, Dr. Randolph Williams to finish his report and forward it to the DA.
The Coroner, reached by phone today, told me it will be a few more weeks, and even when the report is complete, it’s not a matter of public record.
News Channel 5 will stay on this story and try to get the information you’ve been waiting for.
News Channel 5 did not contact Nugent or the Collins family for this story, we’ve approached them in the past. Nugent has repeatedly declined to be interviewed.
Some of Collin’s relatives have gone on camera with me
