Volunteer Program - KALB-TV News Channel 5 & CBS 2

Volunteer Program

To ensure that all volunteers are equipped for the challenge of working with the dying, hospices require that volunteers complete extensive orientation and training sessions, as well as submit to a routine background check.

It's important that volunteers understand the history of hospice and are aware of the specific ways their local hospice works to serve the community.

Depending on area of service, additional training may be available or necessary.

We have many needs for volunteers and we would like for you to be a part of the Oasis family.

Volunteers are as diverse as the patients and families we serve, covering all ages, nationalities, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles.

Our volunteers range from retirees and working professionals to students.

There are no set hours... Only those that you are willing to give!

Volunteers can help patients and families by:

  • Listening as a patient shares memories, feelings, and stories.
  • Filling in to give a family caregiver a short, needed break.
  • Making supportive calls and visits to bereaved family members and friends.
  • Telephoning patients and families to offer reassurance and comfort.
  • Running errands, performing light housekeeping chores.
  • Visiting patients in nursing homes.
  • Taking patients shopping, fishing, walks in the park.
  • Creating Art Projects to brighten up a patient's room or home.
  • Providing administrative office assistance.
