Fort Polk Murder Update

Posted: Updated:

We have new information tonight involving the death of a soldier at Fort Polk.  The FBI says the 21 year old from Montana man died after being attacked at Fort Polk last weekend.

Byron Whitcomb leaves behind a wife and a 2 year old daughter.  People who knew him say he loved sports,  played basketball and hockey.  Whitcomb graduated in 2008 from Whitefish High in Montana then he signed up for the Army.  That's how he ended up on Fort Polk here in Louisiana.

Fort Polk is one of the Army's 3 dirt combat training centers focused on training infantrymen. Whitcomb had been recently promoted and the Army picked him to attend ranger school.

FBI agents are continuing their investigation into Whitcomb's murder.  So far, they are not talking much about details surrounding the soldier's death.  The man they do believe to be responsible, Marcus Carey, is in custody facing murder charges.
