NATCHITOCHES -- Marvin Frazier, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound All-State performer for perennial state prep power Zwolle High School, has signed to play his college basketball at nearby Northwestern State. Frazier signed scholarship papers Wednesday. A center for the Hawks, he projects as a power forward with the Demons, and is averaging 21.3 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game for coach Bradley McLaren's Hawks. "We are so excited about Marvin becoming a part of our basketball family," said 12th-year Demons head coach Mike McConathy. "We have really enjoyed the opportunity to develop a relationship with him and his family. He is a wonderful young man who will be a great player for the Demons." Zwolle has gone 43-9 with a state runner-up finish in his freshman year, 45-6 with a Class B state championship in Frazier's sophomore season, and 37-10 with a state semifinal appearance last season. Frazier was the district most valuable player along with being All-Sabine Parish and first-team All-State last season, when he averaged 14 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 steals. He was all-district and all-parish as a sophomore. "Obviously having another great Louisiana product is always one of our goals in recruiting. We feel like we were able to get one of the top players in the state," said McConathy. "Marvin comes from one of the greatest basketball traditions in Louisiana at Zwolle in a hotbed of basketball in Sabine Parish. He has been a part of championship teams while at Zwolle and that is very important to us. "He has continued to make such huge strides in his game each time we see him through his work ethic and desire to improve. He has a very soft touch and feel for a big man. We feel he will be able to help us with his skill set offensively. He is very unselfish and pass and handle the ball very well. Defensively we add another natural shot blocker on the front line," said McConathy. "Marvin has a great basketball base from Coach McLaren at Zwolle High School. We feel that base will help his transition be even easier from high school to college." The son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Frazier Sr., he is planning to pursue engineering as a career and will be able to follow that academic path at Northwestern. Frazier will be reunited with several summer AAU teammates who now play for the Demons. "Marvin had a great comfort level with our team. He played in the summer for the Louisiana Roundballers and had comfort zone with the guys that were a part of that program on our current team -- Louis Ellis, James Hulbin, Shamir Davis, and Will Mosley," said McConathy. Frazier is the second November signee to join the Demons, along with Bossier High all-state guard Jalan West. They will suit up for Northwestern in the 2011-12 season. Twelve of the current 14 Demon basketball players are Louisiana products and with the addition of Frazier and West and graduation of the 2011 seniors, the current 2011-12 roster is completely comprised of in-state products.
