ALEXANDRIA, La (KALB News Channel 5) - Social security numbers, medical bills even birthdays, all these things can be used to steal one's identity.
"My personal information, I don't want to get out to the public so I save my documents all year round and come here once a year and drop things off." Said Tiffani McLain.
So KALB teamed up with Security Mobile Shredding for Shredfest 2014, a free service to the community. Anyone could bring their personal documents with sensitive information and have them professionally shredded and destroyed properly.
"What we do is we try to assist the Central Louisiana community with their desire to protect their identity, so the idea of course is that you shred all of the sensitive materials that you have you know that have your social security number on it or maybe some medical information you just don't want anybody else to have." Said Michele Godard, General Manager and President at KALB.
The free event is held every year and this year Goodwill joined the team to collect donations from passersby.
Last year Shredfest shredded 20 tons of personal papers, much of which was recycled.
