Students Invited to Pow Wow in Marksville

Posted: Updated:

(MARKSVILLE, La.) – Students from Avoyelles, Rapides and surrounding parishes are invited to experience Pow Wow. The Tunica-Biloxi Pow Wow Committee will present a series of free programs on Native American culture for school children at the Chief Joseph "Alcide" Pierite Pow Wow Grounds on the Tunica-Biloxi Reservation in Marksville May 18 and 19.

"This outreach program is a rare and valuable opportunity for students to learn firsthand about Indian cultures from native people," said John Barbry, pow wow committee chairman. "Students will have a chance to purchase handmade arts and crafts at the conclusion of the programs."

The presentation will cover various components of an inter-tribal Pow Wow, highlighting the historical, social, religious and symbolic significance of its activities. Students will be encouraged to participate in the Round Dance, Two-step and other inter-tribal dances. The Alamoosic Lake Singers from the Penobscot Reservation at Indian Island, Maine, and the Otter Trail Singers from Ardmore, Oklahoma, will accompany dance demonstrations in northern and southern styles during the program.

The program will also include performances of Indian flute music, poetry readings and traditional songs. Indian flute maker and player, Hawk Henries, Nipmuc, returns to the Education Program this year. The Tunica-Biloxi Singers and Legend Keepers will share songs and legends from the Tunica-Biloxi culture. Tom Varnado, Choctaw-Cherokee, will put on an interactive presentation of Native American tools and toys set in a traditional southeastern home site.

There is limited amount of space for each program, so please make your reservations early. The programs are 90 minutes in length and will begin at the following times:

· Wednesday, May 18 9 a.m. & 11 a.m.

· Thursday, May 19 9 a.m. & 11 a.m.

For reservations contact Sharon Reed at (800)946-1946, Ext. 2523

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the Tunica-Biloxi gymnasium across from the pow wow grounds.

Native American dancers and artisans from across the nation will gather for the 16th annual Pow Wow celebration at the Pow Wow Grounds May 20-22. The Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana and Paragon Casino Resort will host the cultural festivities, filled with authentic food, arts and crafts, dancing, singing and more.
