HUD Funding for Louisiana, Mississippi Tribes

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says two Louisiana tribes will get a total of $184,600 in Indian Housing Block Grants, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaws will get almost $3.2 million.

In Louisiana, the Chitimacha Tribe Housing Authority in Charenton is getting nearly $106,800 and the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians almost $78,000. HUD says the grants are part of $400 million allocated nationwide Wednesday, with another $250 million still to be allocated.

The grants are meant to help low-income families living on Indian reservations or in other communities. Amounts are based on a formula that considers local needs and housing units managed by the tribe or designated entity.
