LSU Chancellor Leaves Post, Heads To Colorado

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU Chancellor Michael Martin was appointed Friday by the Colorado State University's Board of Governors to serve as the school's next chancellor. CSU Public Relations confirmed the decision this afternoon.

According to a statement from LSU, Martin announced that he will accept the position of chancellor of the Colorado State University System, which includes CSU in Fort Collins, CSU-Pueblo and the 100 percent online CSU-Global Campus.

"LSU is a great university, and I'm honored to have been your chancellor over the past four years," Martin said, who plans to begin at CSU in August. "Jan and I have made so many friends during our four years here, and LSU will always hold a place in our hearts.

Since Martin was named chancellor of LSU in August 2008, LSU has been ranked as a tier one university by U.S. News & World Report four years in a row, the Forever LSU Campaign was completed and exceeded its goal of raising more than $750 million, and a number of campus improvement projects have been made, including renovations to the LSU Student Union, a new Business Education Complex and a new Tiger Band Hall.

Prior to his appointment as chancellor of LSU in August 2008, Martin served as president of New Mexico State University. Before that, he was vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Florida.

In 2007, he received the Justin Smith Morrill Memorial Award, named after the author of the bill creating land-grant universities, which honors outstanding service on behalf of the land-grant mission. Only six individuals have received this award since it was first given in 1980.

He was also awarded the 2008 Distinguished Leadership Award by Leadership New Mexico. Other recent awards include being named Outstanding Alumnus of Minnesota State University Mankato in 2006 and the NMSU Social Justice Award in 2005.

A native of Crosby, Minn., Martin earned a bachelor's degree in business and economics and a master's degree in economics at Minnesota State University. He received his Ph.D. in applied economics from the University of Minnesota in 1977.

Martin and his wife, Jan, have two children.
