Understanding State Vouchers

Posted: Updated:

A series of statewide Department of Education community meetings took place Saturday to introduce the new school voucher program.

Saturday morning at the Alexandria Mall, state and school representatives were on hand to explain the program and the qualifications to parents interested in enrolling their children.

To be eligible, a student must be currently enrolled in a C, D or F-grade school and must meet income requirements.

The program gives students in those public schools the opportunity to transfer to certain private schools.

One local school, St. Francis Cabrini, has set a few dozen spots aside for students who want to make the jump.

"Cabrini school is currently accepting applications for kindergarten through 6th grade," said Joseph Wiederholt, principal. "We have opened 41 seats in our school for this program."

If you missed the meeting, more information can be found through the state's web site louisianaschools.net.
