ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Grant Parish Sheriff's Department say they have located the body of the missing boater who fell overboard Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release, at 9:20 a.m. this morning, the body of Jesse B. Mercer Jr., 69, of Donaldson Road in Dry Prong was recovered from the Red River near the Colfax Recreational area.

Divers used sonar equipment from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office rescue boat to locate the body.

Mercer drowned Wednesday afternoon at 1:20 p.m. after being thrown from his boat due to rough water conditions, officials say.

Witnesses say Mercer was heading out on the water near the Colfax Lock and Dam to help another boater whose engine had stopped running, when a wave knocked him overboard.

Officials also say the recovery efforts, which were halted Wednesday afternoon due to weather conditions, resumed Thursday morning.  Deputies say Mercer was not intoxicated.
