Residents File Petition For Recall

Posted: Updated:

RAPIDES PARISH, La. - There are some new developments involving the Rapides Parish school board. You may remember last month when they voted in a 5 to 4 decision to not renew Superintendent Gary Jones's contract. News Channel Five's Nolan Crane show us why there is a petition which could eliminate one of the votes and make the superintendent vote 4 to 4.

There is currently a recall petition to remove Julie McConathy from the school board. I'm told it stems from discussions that Julie's husband got a job out of her district and Jones supporters want her to leave before the school board takes another vote. But now, many residents in her district are mad.

School board member John E. Allen Jr. says this petition to recall Julie McConathy may be legal but he doesn't agree with it.

"For these people to try to recall her based on what might happen, I believe is an error," says John E. Allen Jr.

And some residents in her district that we spoke with agree.

"I have to kids that go to the buckeye school system, I have one in elementary school and I have one in the high school and we elected the school board member, she was elected by 60 percent of the vote and I don't believe that they should force her vote out," says David Netherland.

John says he is surprised to see who is spear heading the recall, because there is a lady with the same name who is also the principal of buckeye elementary school.

"If Susan LaCroix Bates is Susan L. Bates that is related on the school directory, then of course the interest there would be to protect and pay back the obligation of appointing her daughter. At least that is applied," says John E. Allen Jr.

"If it is true I think it is wrong in what ms. bates is trying to do, I think is should absolutely stand the way that it is and when the school board member is not there any longer and she is replaced then the new school board members vote should count but until then I think it should stay the way it is," says David Netherland.

John says even if the superintendent's supporter's get their way by eliminating Julie's vote, it will be up to Governor Jindal to select a replacement.

"His integrity would be to appoint someone that is completely unbiased, someone that he thinks will serve the board in its best interest," says John E. Allen Jr.

In order for the recall petition process to begin, it will take more than 4,000 signatures from voters in McConathy's district.

We called every Rapides Parish school board member, including McConathy and we want to thank John for being the only one who returned our call and was willing to go on camera. We also called the two ladies spear heading the petition and they didn't return our calls.
