Police Chief Pleads Guilty

Posted: Updated:

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Former Leesville police chief Bobby Hickman pleaded guilty in court Wednesday just weeks after his last appearance.

The plea hearing was Wednesday afternoon at the federal courthouse in Lake Charles before U.S. Judge Richard T. Haik.

Hickman pled guilty to one count of a five-count indictment that was returned against him last September.

During the guilty plea hearing held in federal court, he also agreed to the forfeiture of three weapons, including a sawed-off shotgun.

According to court documents filed during the plea and courtroom testimony, Hickman was terminated as the police chief of the Leesville Police Department last January because he failed to cooperate in an internal investigation by city officials.

Last March, the acting chief obtained a state search warrant to Hickman's home to look and recover police equipment issued to Hickman that was not returned after his termination.

During the search, deputies from the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office also retrieved a Charter Arms revolver with the serial number obliterated from the firearm.

At sentencing, Hickman faces a prison term up to a maximum of five years or a fine of not more than $250,000 or both. In addition, the term includes a supervised release of up to three years following release from confinement.

Hickman remains on a pre-trial release pending his sentencing.
