Livingston Parish Inmate Dies

Posted: Updated:

LIVINGSTON, La. - An inmate involved in a fight with Livingston Parish sheriff's deputies has died.

Chief Criminal Deputy Jason Ard tells Associated Press that preliminary information indicates that inmate Darrin Norton's death was not related to the altercation. The parish coroner says it's too early to determine the cause of Norton's death.

The 35-year-old Norton of Denham Springs had been booked on Saturday on counts of aggravated criminal damages to property, criminal trespassing and resisting arrest. He was pronounced dead at the detention center Sunday night.

Dr. Ron Coe said that no coroner's report has been issued and it is too early to determine the inmate's cause of death. Deputies were attempting to move Norton to a padded cell for his safety when the altercation occurred.
