August 11-12 marks the Fourth Annual Demon Digfest four-on-four sand volleyball tournament at the Point Place Marina on Cane River, the Northwestern State volleyball team announced.
The fundraiser will assist the Lady Demons in many ways, including the summer scholarship fund, the NSU volleyball media room, locker room renovations, team travel and other projects for the program. It will also help the team achieve its goals in becoming one of the top programs, not only in the Southland Conference, but also regionally and nationally.
"We are really excited for our Fourth Annual Demon Digfest. This has been a great event for the program in the past and we are excited for its continued growth," said co-head coach Stephanie Hernesman. "Last year we raised almost $2000, and that was with the river being closed (this year it will be open). We would love be able to raise that amount again, but this year our goal is to double it."
The cost to enter is $50 per team, which can have up to six players with four playing at one time. The teams must also have at least one female on the court at all times. A schedule of the event will be sent via email prior to the tournament and teams must check in at least one hour before the scheduled time.
Courtside sponsorships are available for $100 a team, and a courtside combo deal is $150.
"One of the biggest ways to support our team is to either sponsor a team or become a courtside sponsor, which are available even if people cannot make it to the event," Hernesman said. "Last year we had numerous individuals and companies purchase courtside sponsorship or sponsor a team. Willbro donated a whopping $500 which was one of the biggest donations the program has ever had."
The event will also be a great opportunity to meet the 2012 Lady Demon volleyball team before the season begins.
"We'd like to invited people to watch volleyball with our team even if they aren't interested in playing," Hernesman said. "We recommend bringing a chair and enjoying free food and listening to music with us."
Last year, all teams that entered the tournament earned a participation award, and the teams that finished top 3 left with team awards. The same amount of prizes will be distributed this year, as teams are once again anticipated to come from all over the region.
"We are so grateful that Mr. Robert from Point Place Marina allows us to use his venue to run this event. He is an amazing supporter for our program and always does a lot to help us," Hernesman said. "This community is great and is always willing to help when it comes to our athletes and I look forward to the challenge of doubling our efforts."
