NATCHITOCHES – The first out-of-season reunion for Northwestern State Lady Demon basketball players, coaches and staff members is set for Friday night, Aug. 3, with a social event before the next day's Don't Die Wondering Classic XXIV golf scramble.
Anyone connected with the Lady Demon program through the years, including those who played before it became an official intercollegiate sport in 1975, is welcome to join the reunion festivities, which will feature former head coaches James Smith and Pat Pierson in the spotlight.
The gathering will be held at Mama's Blues Room on Front Street in downtown Natchitoches from 5:30-7:30. The golf tournament is set for 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. tee times on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Demon Hills Golf Course.
An annual reunion is held during each season, but new co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr decided to stage another reunion after talking with former players who found the in-season dates difficult to make.
"There are a lot of people who would love to come back and see former teammates and coaches and supporters, but it's difficult to impossible for many during the basketball season because of work or family obligations. Lots have their own kids playing during that time, some are coaching at that time, but everybody we've heard from cherishes their involvement with Lady Demon basketball and wants to get together," said Brooke Stoehr.
"There is such an amazing tradition with this basketball program, and such a strong sense of family that extends through the years. The young players have been well educated about what those before them accomplished as basketball players and as young women. Talking with those from well back in our history, they are very proud of those who have followed, what has happened and seeing the program develop.
"When you consider that the first girls basketball camp in the state took place here at Northwestern, and that the first 10 women's athletic scholarships in the history of the state were awarded by NSU in 1975, our history is remarkable, and many of those women are still very involved with our program, including Coach Pierson," said Stoehr.
RSVPs are requested to the Facebook page for Lady Demon basketball or to Stoehr at email@example.com to help with planning for the event. Even if former Lady Demons are unable to attend, they are encouraged to visit the Facebook page.
