Report: Lavergne In Jefferson Hospital On Night Of Shunick's Disappearance

Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (WDSU) - The man police have linked to the disappearance of a University of Louisiana student was treated for injuries at a New Orleans-area hospital the night that woman was last seen.

Lafayette police say they are searching the home of 33-year-old Brandon Lavergne after he was charged with aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder in the disappearance of Mickey Shunick.

Lafayette television station KATC reported that Brandon Scott Lavergne received medical treatment at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson on the night of May 19.

According to reports filed with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, Lavergne said he had been stabbed.

The documents show Lavergne claimed he was attacked at a gas station, but could not specify the location of that business. He said the attack happened that afternoon.

Shunick was last seen hours earlier -- early that morning -- leaving a friend's house on her bicycle. She was reported missing when she failed to show up to her brother's graduation.

In surveillance footage later released by police, a petite blonde woman believed to be Shunick is seen riding her bike down the street. A white pickup truck also appears in the footage.

Shunick's bike was found eight days later, beneath a bridge about 25 miles from her friend's home.

Police arrested the 33-year-old Lavergne at his home one week ago. He is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.

According to the Louisiana State Police sex offender registry, Lavergne was convicted of aggravated oral sexual battery in 2000. He served nearly eight years in prison and was on probation until November 2010.

Family members have held out hope that Shunick is still alive, but police have suggested that it is not likely.

Lavergne is not cooperating with the investigation, they said.
