J.D. Garrett’s Memorial Service

Posted: Updated:

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Hundreds of people attended the Friday memorial service for Natchitoches Police Juror J.D. Garrett, the man many called coach. News Channel Five's Nolan Crane attended today's celebration of life and joins us with the details.

I'm here at the Christian Baptist Church where hundreds of people throughout Natchitoches have come together to pay respects to coach J.D. Garrett who was a pillar in the community for so many years.

Garrett's daughter says the large turnout for her father's memorial service shows just how many lives he touched.

"It just lets me know how much the people in this town love him and really appreciate everything that he's done," says Yvette Williams.

Mr. Garrett's eleven year-old grandson says although everyone remembering the father, friend, co-worker, and coach they have lost, this is a time to reflect on the positive impact his grandfather made.

"He was my grandpa and everybody loved him. It's kind of sad but we have to know that this is a celebration and he lived a good life," says Trevor Williams Jr.

It seems J.D. Garrett is remembered not just by his community, but by people across the nation, who traveled to show support for the man, who always supported them.

"I did so because he was such a pillar to this community, a giant of a person and everybody knew him, everybody respected him, and everybody knew he was the communities coach," says Kurt Clark.

In his 74 years of life, he spent much of his time here, at the Natchitoches city swimming pool, teaching kids how to swim, he also would become an All-American football player, and a father who taught his children what they say was one of the most important lessons of all.

"He told us to always love other people, respect other people and to love god," says Yvette Williams.

Coach J.D. Garrett will always be remembered and tomorrow his funeral will take place at eleven o'clock at the Natchitoches Event Center.
