Under Fire: Trustee Resigns at Penn State

Posted: Updated:

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WDSU) - Steve Garban, who was the chairman of the Penn State University Board of Trustees during the Jerry Sandusky scandal, has resigned, the Centre Daily Times reported on Thursday.

A report issued by former FBI Director Louis Freeh was critical of the trustees' secrecy and their deference to university leaders in allowing the crisis to continue and cause more harm.

According to the Freeh report, Garban was informed by then-university president Graham Spanier in April 2011 of the Sandusky investigation, but failed to notify the other trustees.

In October 2011, Garban was informed by Spanier that athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz were about to be indicted. Garban told two trustees -- John Surma and Jim Broadhurst - about that information, but did not tell any of the other trustees, according to the report.

Karen Peetz replaced Garban as chairman in January, but he remained one of the 32 trustees.

ESPN had reported earlier that many of the trustees were angry at Garban for leaving them out of the loop.
