PINEVILLE, La. - A member of the Louisiana National Guard serving here at Camp Beauregard has been honored with an international humanitarian award. News Channel Five's Nolan Crane shows us how he helped play a major role in the rebuilding effort, following Hurricane Katrina.

Staff Sergeant Jeffery Woods works at the Louisiana National Guard. He's the unit supply sergeant where he makes sure everyone in his battalion has what they need when disaster strikes.

"Handing out bottled water, rations and ready to eat meals that we get from the military, and that's what we gave to everyone in the super dome who we could help," says Staff Sergeant Jeffery Woods.

During Hurricane Katrina, Sergeant Woods was one of the first responders who took care of the Nola residents in need.

"Staff Sergeant Woods and the battalion arrived several days before Katrina hit and rode out Katrina in the super dome along with 30,000 evacuees, taking care of the evacuees," says Staff Sergeant Steve Quinnelly.

Sergeant Quinnelly says he was there in 2005, and saw Sergeant Woods' heroic actions.

"My wife Cara Quinnelly who is the first vice president of the Ruston Kiwanis club nominated staff Sergeant Jeffery Woods for the humanitarian award for 2012," says Staff Sergeant Steve Quinnelly.

To Sergeant Woods' surprise, he was honored as the Kiwanis international humanitarian award winner and he is grateful for the recognition.

"I'm really proud of the award because it gives me pleasure to say I served in the military for Hurricane Katrina and Louisiana National Guard," says Staff Sergeant Jeffery Woods.

But his co-worker says it's only fitting that sergeant woods received the honors.

"Because of his humanitarian efforts during Hurricane Katrina which was very fitting because this year the theme was New Orleans and New Orleans being rebuilt and the people who helped rebuild there city," says Staff Sergeant Steve Quinnelly.

Sergeant Woods says what he and the rest of his fellow soldiers did during Hurricane Katrina is a part of there mission to serve where needed. Staff Sergeant Jeffery Woods is a member of the Kiwanis Club in Ruston, which honored him with the international humanitarian award.
