LAFAYETTE, La. - The former Fort Polk soldier Brandon Lavergne has pleaded not guilty to first- degree murder charges.
Lavergne is accused of killing Lisa Pate in 1999 and Mickey Shunick on May 19.
Lavergne was not present in court, but in a private hearing room inside the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. He was kept inside due to safety concerns.
A trial date will be set after Oct. 9, which is the deadline for all motions to be filed.
