Opelousas Man Arrested On Burglary, Theft Charges

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. – Deputies arrested a man Monday on burglary and theft charges during a traffic stop.

Jacque L. Gatewood, 22, of 613 S. King Street in Opelousas, was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail and was charged with 11 counts of simple burglary, three counts of felony theft, eight counts of theft and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is also wanted by Lafayette Parish for 22 counts of simple burglary, according to police.

Authorities say between July 26 and July 29, they received multiple complaints from residents about items taken from their vehicles during the night.

On Monday, police say they received numerous calls about a suspicious white vehicle in the Fort Hamilton area in Opelousas. According to police reports, the deputies conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and that's when they discovered Gatewood in the driver's seat with the stolen items.

Later, detectives arrived on the scene to collect and return the items back to the owners.

St. Landry Parish Spokesperson Lt. Megan Vizena said that residents should not leave valuable items in vehicles.

"Your vehicle should be locked at all times and try to keep it in a well-lit area if possible," Vizena said. "We encourage anyone who sees something suspicious to give us a call. That's what the residents of Fort Hamilton did and they are the reason this crime has been solved."

Gatewood is being held at the St. Landry Parish Jail on a $100,000 bond.
