Look to the Skies Tonight for Perseid Meteor Shower

Posted: Updated:

Look to the skies tonight for what is forecasted to be the best meteor shower of the year- the Perseid Meteor Shower. It is also an extra special event because Jupiter, Venus, and the crescent moon will also be visible!

The show begins tonight after around 11pm and runs each night through August 13. The best time to see meteors will be in the few hours leading up to dawn, when it is nice and dark. You should look to the east at this time.

Tonight, we'll see partly cloudy to mostly clear skies in CenLa so it will be a good night for star gazing. Also, it will also be easier to view the show if you are away from city lights so if you're serious about spotting some meteors you may want to take a drive into the country.

It is estimated that as many as 100 meteors per hour will be visible. You can try and count them yourself by downloading the free 'Meteor Counter' app developed by NASA. It is free for download in the Android Marketplace or Apple App Store.
