Officer Killed in Car Accident

ROSEPINE, La—The Rosepine Police Department is remembering one of its own, after a car accident claimed the life of one of its officers.

42-year-James Tipper was killed in a car accident on his way into work Thursday morning.

Louisiana State Police say it happened on Highway 171 at Leach Road around 7:40 a.m.

Troopers say 27-year-old Jeffrey C. Townsend of Ormond Beach, FL was behind Officer Tipper, when he hit Tipper's car as he was preparing to turn.

Tipper's Jeep overturned. Troopers say he was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected.

LSP says Townsend was not wearing his seatbelt, but was not injured. He was issued a citation for following too close.

Rosepine Police Chief James Parrott told News Channel Five Officer Tipper was a loyal member of his department, was a good officer and did his job well.

Chief Parrott describes his officer as a ‘people person' and says it's a great loss to the department he'd served since 1999.

"We're like a family here," Chief Parrott said. "This has been a great loss for all our guys."
