Boats, Barges Stuck On Miss. River

Posted: Updated:

GREENVILLE, Miss. - Nearly 100 boats and barges are stuck on the Mississippi River due to low river levels from the drought, and the U.S. coast guard has closed an 11-mile stretch near Greenville, Miss.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is using special equipment to make sure the river is deep enough to keep critical boat traffic afloat.

The dredge is almost like a vacuum cleaner: it sucks up sand and mud from the river bed, sends it through a pipeline and spits it all out to the far end.

The intended goal is to carve and maintain a 300-foot wide channel at least 9 feet deep and big enough to keep the boat traffic flowing smoothly.
