ALEXANDRIA, La. – Police have a man in custody after he was suspected of stealing a handgun from a car and left the scene on a bicycle early Wednesday morning.

According to police reports, deputies were dispatched to the 5600 block of Benjamin Street just after 6 a.m. today to investigate a possible vehicle burglary.

Upon arrival, deputies say residents reported a man, wearing pajamas and riding a bicycle, opened their car door, reached inside the vehicle and removed a handgun.

Deputies say Brandon Benjamin, 28, of 5613 Benjamin Street in Alexandria was arrested for vehicle burglary without incident after they recovered a firearm from his home.

Benjamin is a convicted felon and he has a history of being charged for firearm possession. He is in the Rapides Parish Detention Center Wednesday without bond on the convicted felon in possession of a firearm charge. The firearm was given back to the owner.
