Electronic Proof of Insurance Now Acceptable

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, LA.- There's a new driving law that's helping tech-savvy drivers follow the rules of the road.

A new law allowing drivers to display an electronic proof on insurance on their smartphones and tablets took effect August 1.

Of course, the old-fashioned paper insurance cards are still being accepted.

Many insurance companies like the Randy Wiggins State Farm office in Alexandria offer free 'apps' such as State Farm's 'pocket agent' for smartphones and tablets so that insurance cards can be easily accessed.

"Well it's very handy because it's difficult to keep up with those. Sometimes you get them in the mail and you forget to put them in the car and by having this they'll pretty much always have they're smartphone and they can display that insurance card on the smartphone. It will allow them to maybe not get a ticket and or have to go through the process of producing that after they do get a ticket," says Randy Wiggins.

And you might want to make sure you take advantage of this new law, because another one also went into effect on August 1.

That one states that if a driver cannot provide proof of insurance their vehicle may be impounded on the first offense.
