Young Achiever's Spotlight- Jacob Coco

Posted: Updated:

SIMMESPORT, LA.- On this week's 'Young Achiever's Spotlight' we'll head down Highway 1 to Simmesport to meet a young man who's still just a teenager, but who's already stepping up to the plate to make a difference in his community.

Down the road in Simmesport, there's a young man whose making a big difference in his small town.

"Jacob has a very good influence. He's young, he's ambitious, and that's something we need here in town," says Simmesport Mayor Eric Rusk.

At only 19 Jacob Coco has stepped up as a role model to other young people in the town....

"The kids are the future. My generation too. If we don't do anything there's going to be nothing here," says Coco.

And as a promising young leader for the community.

"I want to strengthen the police department. I want to strengthen the fire department. I want to build more things for our kids because there's nothing really to do for the children," adds Jacob.

Jacob volunteers for two sports clubs, organizes parades and festivals for the town, and helps the fire department with fund raisers. At one time, he even spear-headed a community-wide neighborhood watch group.

According to his mother Tonya Coco, it's because he has a passion for the people of his town....and that's the way it's always been.

"I think it's amazing for a child so small to have such a love for his town and country and then grow up to be 19 years old and still have that same passion for it," says Tonya.

And now Jacob is adding one more item to his resume...politician....because he's running for the position of Alderman.

But whether or not this young achiever wins the election this November is not what's important say his friends and family. It's about not being afraid to step up and take a shot at making a difference.

"If you do not try anything you'll never succeed so you have to get out there and try something. If it works out good, if it doesn't try another strategy and go at it again," says Mayor Rusk.

Jacob will run against Democratic opponent Sherman Bell in the election this November. We tried to speak with him today, but he was unfortunately unavailable.
