Crime on NSU’s Campus

Posted: Updated:

NATCHITOCHES, La. - A 16-year-old was charged with sexual battery at residence hall on the NSU campus in Natchitoches. News Channel Five's Nolan Crane spent the evening on the NSU campus where students and staff say everyone's safety is a top priority.

"It's really kind of scary," says Alicia Alford.

Alicia Alford has been a freshman at northwestern state university for less than a week, but already, she's heard the news that an alleged sexual assault has taken place here.

"I've heard from the police officers at one point, I had asked them when I was coming in here and everything if this kind of thing happened and they said, nothing like this really ever happens like at all," says Alicia Alford.

Alicia's wasn't the only student surprised. Other students also received text messages and e-mails from the campus police notifying them about an alleged sexual assault that took place Monday, at the Varnado residence hall.

"Something like this has never happened before, it's completely out of the blue," says Dmarcus Molette.

When Dmarcus found out about the crime, he made sure to tell his sister who also attends NSU.

"I wanted her to be safe and make sure that she tells me if she has to go out or if she needed anything I could come over and help her at any time," says Dmarcus Molette.

A 16-year-old is now in police custody, which students say makes them feel safer, but the added security measures like surveillance cameras, more lighting, and extra patrols, help too.

"My roommate is an RA at university place 1 and we both received phone calls, voice mails and e-mails about the incident that occurred," says Ryan Looper.

"I actually received an e-mail on my NSU account that explained what had happened and it also gave some great tips about how to stay safe on campus," says Alicia Alford.

A campus that's proud of its safety, now trying to help students feel that way once again, after this frightening crime.

The 16-year-old juvenile suspect in this case faces a list of charges, including sexual battery, simple battery and theft. He's being held in the ware youth center in Coushatta.
