Lemoine: "It's About The Kids" In Desegregation

Posted: Updated:

AVOYELLES PARISH, La. - A federal judge has declared the Avoyelles Parish School System is desegregated when it comes to staff and teacher assignments and its facilities.

For more than 40 years, the school board has been part of a desegregation lawsuit. That means the school system has to get federal approval for all issues relating to hiring, student population, transportation and facilities.

Dwayne Lemoine, the Avoyelles Parish Schools superintendent, says it's all part of a decades-long process of following a desegregation order. For instance, the judge is requiring written documentation that all school cheerleader and majorette tryouts will include at least one minority judge. Lemoine says he will file that paperwork early next week.

"It's not going to be won or lost overnight. It's about kids," Lemoine says. "It's not about winning or losing. This is just about trying to remove the vestiges of a separating system. So we understand that it's a challenge for us. We feel good about what happened today."
