Make Sure Pets are Protected

Posted: Updated:

PINEVILLE, LA.- As you finish up preparations for your home and for your family...don't forget about the pets!

Make sure you have the proper supplies on hand so that your pet is taken care of before and after the storm.

"Make sure that you have plenty of food and water like you do with people. The animals need the food and water. If they're on medication make sure their medication is up to date and everything. And, if you have an outside pet if possible bring them inside. If not make sure they have some shelter they can get in. If the shelters in a field or something put it on a pallet so it won't get water on it when the water starts to stand or put them in a shed or something. Just make sure there's somewhere where they can get out of the elements," says Ginger Thill of the Pineville Animal Shelter.

And if you won't be home during the storm, make sure you make the proper arrangements.

"If you're not home you need somebody to come in and check on them because dogs and cats, well all animals, some of them do have a fear of the weather," adds Thill.

Also, make sure your pet has the proper identification.

"Yeah, it is very important to have either a rabies tag or a tag with the name and address so we know who the dog belongs to."

Officials say if your pet manages to get loose during the storm, make sure to call your local animal shelter to find out if they've been picked up.
