RPSO Checks Up on Elderly

Posted: Updated:

RAPIDES PARISH, La. -- Rapides Parish deputies went out Wednesday to check on elderly residents around Rapides Parish, making sure they have the medicine, food and supplies they need before Isaac hits.

News Channel Five's Brooke Buford rode with a deputy to check on the people who sometimes aren't able to help themselves. She has the story.

Rapides Parish deputy John Kelso is working overtime to check-up on the elderly across Rapides Parish.

He and another deputy are going door to door Wednesday to check on about 80 older, homebound residents on their elderly watch list.

"We just go around checking to make sure that they have everything that they need," said Deputy Kelso. "Make sure they have water and food. And, during the hot summer, make sure they have air conditioning."

He's racing against the clock and against Isaac.

"Yesterday especially, I was moving from house to house just as fast as I could go, just to make sure that they had stuff that they needed."

At his latest stop, he's checking up on 90-year-old Letta Faye Taylor, who lives on her own.

"They have done so much for me," said Taylor. "I know if I need anyone, I can get them. Just that quick."

Ms. Taylor says she's grateful for the watchful eye and says it makes her feel secure - even in the midst of a storm headed her way.

"Oh yes, even more. In case we had to evacuate or something, I can always call him and he could run me out of here to a shelter or somewhere,' she said.

Deputy Kelso says he'll continue going door to door throughout the storm to make sure people like Ms. Taylor stay safe. He says it's all a part of his duty as a deputy and as a friend to the people he cares for.

And if you're looking to add your loved one to the RPSO elderly check-up list. You can contact the sheriff's department at 318-473-6717.
