Ultraviolet Technology in Natchitoches

Posted: Updated:

NATCHITOCHES, LA.- A CenLa nursing home is taking cleanliness to a whole new level.

Natchitoches Community Care is only the second health facility in the state to implement a technology known as an ultra-violet disinfection system.

A machine that resembles a robot is placed inside an empty patient room and activated by a remote control. Ultraviolet light is reflected throughout the room, killing any harmful pathogens present like viruses, bacteria, and molds.

Studies show the technology reduces hospital acquired infections by about 40%.

"We put it into a room, roughly 1,000 square feet, energize the machine, and it breaks the DNA of the microorganism, keeps the organism from being able to replicate, and therefore, the organism dies off," says John Morrow, President and CEO of UV-C Technologies.

The process takes about 15 minutes to complete. So far, those working with the device say they haven't found an organism immune to the technology.
